Monthly Sea Ice Index (North Line - 1985)

The images in the Sea Ice Index data set depict average ice conditions, estimated using satellite passive microwave data for the most recent month available, as well as snapshots of trends and anomalies that compare these recent conditions with the mean for the month. Monthly sea ice extent shapefiles are available for Northern and Southern hemispheres, both polygons and polylines, 1978 to 2011.

Note: This dataset is comprised of multiple shapefiles. There are 4 shapefiles for each year between 1978 and 2011. There are 2 shapefiles for the North Pole and 2 shapefiles for the South Pole. For each pole at each year there is a polyline and a polygon shapefile. Polygon files show the ice as an area for each month, and polyline shows the average perimiter of the ice during each month.
