Abstract
The Greater Sage Grouse Habitat and Buffer layer is a combination of winter, breeding and brooding habitat (including Critical habitat) of this Endangered Species. Habitat areas were derived for nesting, brood rearing, and winter survival of greater sage grouse in southeastern Alberta. This map was based upon legal land lcoations and resource selection functions of greater sage grouse habitat. Resource selection habitat layers were determined by re-classifying a landscape-scale resource selection function for nesting sage-grouse at an RSF value that overlaps 83% of an independent sample of n = 90 nest sites (95% confidence limits are 74 and 90%). Parks Canada (Dr. David Gummer) and ASRD (Joel Nicholson) developed the RSF layers. These RSF layers were joined with legal land location to LSD scale, to derive the Greater Sage Grouse Habitat and Buffer. This information is consistent with data layers being used by the sage grouse zonation process. All habitat was buffered by 1000m to indicate setback.
Greater sage grouse are endangered species in Alberta. This data is provided to the general public, industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of sage grouse habitat. Specific operating conditions apply to sage grouse habitat. Proponents are required to examine the habitat buffer for application of setbacks.
Greater Sage Grouse Habitat and Buffer layers have been endorsed by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
